Key Ingredient (L-Citrulline Malate) Research Overview
In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study with crossover, forty-one resistance-trained men performed eight sets of flat barbell bench presses (four sets at the beginning of a workout and four at the end) to fatigue, using eighty-percent of their one-repetition max. L -Citrulline Malate administered at an amount of eight grams prior to exercise was shown to increase the number of repetitions performed to failure over the eight sets with the average increase being nineteen-percent!
This study utilized twelve resistance-trained men and a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled protocol with crossover, Subjects were given eight grams of L-Citrulline Malate prior to exercise. Volunteers performed 5 sets of repetitions to failure at sixty-percent of their one-repetition maximum for leg press, hack squat, and leg extension exercises. Compared to placebo, L-Citrulline Malate supplementation increased the number of repetitions to failure for all exercises. On average, a nine-percent increase in performance was found.
The same group that performed study #2 above also performed this one. It was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study with crossover as well. Subjects consisted of fourteen resistance-trained men, who were administered eight grams of L-Citrulline Malate prior to exercise. Volunteers performed three sets of pushups, reverse chin-ups and chin-ups to failure.
For the L-Citrulline Malate group, a significant increase in the number of repetitions performed to failure was noted for all three exercises.
Fifteen resistance-trained females completed 2 randomized, double-blind trials and were given either eight grams of L-Citrulline Malate (along with eight grams of glucose) or just eight grams of glucose and asked to perform six sets to failure of leg press and bench press. They managed significantly more reps on the two exercises when they took L-Citrulline Malate versus when they took a placebo.
